Massage Therapy at The Nature Cottage
General Questions
What is the difference between the “Sanctuary Relaxation” massage and therapeutic massage?
At The Nature Cottage, the Sanctuary Relaxation massage is a Swedish style massage that focuses on relaxation and stress relief, using gentle techniques to improve circulation and promote calm. Therapeutic massage begins with a brief assessment of your injury or condition and may incorporate different techniques, deeper or more focused pressure, and target specific areas of tension or discomfort to address chronic pain, muscle recovery, or stress-related conditions.
How often should I schedule a massage?
Consistency is key for maintaining wellness. For general relaxation, a monthly session is ideal. If you’re working on a specific goal, such as pain relief or improved mobility, weekly or biweekly sessions are highly effective.
Should I see a Massage Therapist if I’m not in pain?
Massage therapy is a great natural solution when you want relief from pain, but it can also be used as a preventive treatment too. Seeing your massage therapist regularly can help:
- Lower cortisol and raise serotonin levels to calm and relax your body
- Loosen tight muscles, which may increase blood flow, leading to lowering your blood pressure
- Improve sleep
- Boost immunity
- Relieve anxiety and fight depression
- Break up scar tissue
- Enhance physical performance
- Improve range of motion
- Reduce swelling
What should I expect during my first massage at The Nature Cottage?
Your first session begins with a brief consultation to discuss your health history, goals, and any concerns. You’ll relax in a serene, peaceful setting designed to promote healing. The therapist will walk you through the process and answer any questions you have before, during and after the session.
What should I wear during a massage?
You’re welcome to undress to your comfort level. At The Nature Cottage, we ensure your privacy and comfort at all times with proper draping. Most people prefer to remove all clothing, but some choose to keep undergarments on. Only the area being worked on will be uncovered.
I’m self-conscious about _____. What should I do?
We all have parts of our body we’re self-conscious about. Some areas you may be concerned about are:
- Your weight
- Unwanted body hair
- Scars
- Acne or other skin blemishes
Please don’t let this stop you from getting help from a massage therapist. If you’re sensitive about a particular area, ask them to avoid it. You can also opt for a fully clothed massage, although you will not receive the full benefits from this treatment. Whatever your concerns, know that your therapists are friendly, supportive and judgment-free.
Are massages at The Nature Cottage painful?
As a trained therapist, I work intuitively and adjust the pressure to suit your needs and preferences. Whether you prefer light, medium, or deep pressure, I ensure your experience is both effective and enjoyable. Conversely, please keep in mind that while it may sometimes feel like you need deeper pressure, the therapist is trained to read your body and may recognize that more aggressive treatment may ultimately undermine the healing process.
Holistic Health and Wellness
Are there any health conditions I should mention before my massage?
Yes, certain conditions may not be safe for receiving massage therapy at all. Others may require the therapist to make adjustments for you. Please let us know about any medical conditions, injuries, allergies, or recent surgeries. We tailor our treatments to meet your unique needs safely and effectively.
Do you accept insurance as payment?
While we do not bill insurance companies at this time, we will gladly provide you with a receipt for services if your insurance company offers reimbursement for complementary services, such as massage therapy.
Do you integrate other wellness practices into your massages?
Yes! At The Nature Cottage, we are happy to blend massage with other holistic therapies like Reiki energy healing, aromatherapy, sound therapy, or crystal healing. Let us know if you’d like to incorporate these into your session.
What is the purpose of sound therapy or crystal healing during a massage?
Sound therapy uses calming tones to reduce stress and promote balance, while crystal healing involves placing natural stones to enhance energy flow and grounding. Both complement the benefits of massage for a truly holistic experience.

If you arrive late your session may be shortened in order to accommodate others whose appointments follow yours. We will do our best to provide you with the services you have booked, but we cannot guarantee the full time if you arrive late. Full payment for your scheduled services will be expected.

Enhancing Your Experience
Is tipping expected?
While tipping is never required, it is greatly appreciated. If you wish to show gratitude, the customary range is 15-20% of your session fee.
Is it ok to use tobacco, marijuana, or drink alcohol before my massage?
We ask that you please refrain from using tobacco, recreational drugs, or alcohol at least 4 hours before your appointment. Even some prescription or over the counter medications can contraindicate massage.
Can I talk during my massage?
Your experience is entirely up to you. Many clients prefer a peaceful, quiet session, while others enjoy light conversation. The therapist will follow your lead.
Will I be sore after a massage?
It’s normal to feel some mild soreness after a massage, especially if you had deeper pressure or worked on areas of chronic tension. This is similar to the soreness you might experience after a workout and usually resolves within 24-48 hours. Drinking plenty of water and resting can help minimize discomfort. If soreness persists or is concerning, let us know so we can adjust future sessions.
Can I end the massage early?
Absolutely. At The Nature Cottage, your comfort and well-being are our top priorities. Both the client and the therapist have the right to end the session at any point if they feel uncomfortable, unwell, or simply wish to stop. You can let your therapist know, and the session will end immediately. You will only be charged for the time spent on the table.
We encourage open communication with your therapist throughout the session—whether it’s about the pressure, temperature, or anything else affecting your comfort. Our goal is to ensure you leave feeling relaxed and cared for.
What if I fall asleep and drool or snore?
It’s normal to fall asleep during a massage. You might be feeling stressed and sleep-deprived, so falling asleep is normal once you’re in a relaxed state.
There’s zero judgment from us if you snore. We’re pleased that you are able to relax enough to fall asleep, and we won’t mention it.
Drooling is also common, especially if you’re laying on your front. If you ask us for a tissue, and we’ll be glad to grab one for you.
What if I pass gas during a massage?
When you’re in a relaxed state, you might pass gas during your massage. It may even occur when the therapist applies direct pressure to a particular area.
Any massage therapist will let you know this is normal and just shows you’re relaxed. You’ll get zero judgment from your therapist. If you can’t bear to let it happen, just excuse yourself to go to the bathroom.
What happens if I’m ticklish?
Let your massage therapist know before your session. They can use firm, slow pressure or, if you’re extremely sensitive, they can avoid your tickle spots.
What if I have big breasts that get in the way or make it uncomfortable to lay face down?
If you are uncomfortable laying face down, (for any reason) or in any other position, let your massage therapist know. Bolsters, pillows and towels can be used to make you as comfortable as possible.
What if I’ve experienced a trauma (or abuse) that is still triggered by touch? Should I let my massage therapist know?
Yes, absolutely let your massage therapist know if you do not want to be touched in a specific area or in a certain way. You don’t have to give us any details, and you have the right to ask to take a break or end your massage all together at any time, for any reason.
Can I joke about “happy endings” even if I have no interest in receiving one?
No, not even as a joke. This is disrespectful to your massage therapist and our profession. Additionally, we have a zero tolerance policy and any sexual advances, innuendo, or inappropriate touching is grounds for immediate termination of your session.
What if I get aroused or get an erection during my massage?
Arousal is a natural parasympathetic response, so don’t feel guilty. However, understand that it was not your massage therapist’s intention to arouse you. Our professional ethical code of conduct requires us to make sure boundaries are clear. If there is a technique or motion that aroused you, it is okay to tell your therapist to stop that motion. Just to be clear, we do have a zero tolerance policy and any sexual advances, innuendo, or inappropriate behavior or touching is grounds for immediate termination of your session.
